A. Listen to the song and just enjoy it!

In Spanish we use the verb “gustar” with articles and nouns. As you know, nouns have an assigned gender in Spanish, which means we need to use the definite articles: el, la, los, las.

B. Match the phrases to form sentences with the verb “gustar”.

We don’t use articles with verbs either. Listen to the song again and pay attention to “me gusta correr”.

C. Listen to these sentences and repeat.

  • Me gusta comer.
  • No me gusta cantar.
  • Me gusta hacer deporte.

Remember the following rules:

Me gusta + infinitivo / sustantivo singular

What is an infinitivo? It’s a verb in his basic form, that is a verb with the endings -ar, -er, -ir.

For example: verbs like bailo, como, bebes, tienes, etc are all conjugated. The infinitive (or base form) would be: bailar, comer, beber, tener)

  • Me gusta bailar.
  • Me gusta este gato.

We can’t say “me gusta bailo”, because we’d be conjugating two verbs, which is not good grammar. Remember, the second verb should always go in its base form: the infinitivo.

Me gustan + sustantivo plural

This rule is simple, if the noun is plural, use “gustan” with an “n”.

  • Me gustan estos gatos.
  • No me gustan las mentiras.
