In the digital age, language learning has evolved beyond traditional methods. With advancements in artificial intelligence, language learners (and teachers) now have a powerful tool at their disposal—ChatGPT. Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT is a state-of-the-art language model that can be harnessed for immersive and interactive language learning experiences. In this blog post, we’ll explore how to leverage ChatGPT to enhance your language skills and make the learning process more engaging.
- Conversational Practice:
One of the key features of ChatGPT is its ability to engage in dynamic and realistic conversations. Language learners can use this to their advantage by initiating conversations with the model in the language they are trying to master. This provides an opportunity for real-time practice, allowing learners to improve their speaking and listening skills in a natural and interactive way. The model’s responses are generated contextually, enabling learners to pick up on colloquial expressions and nuances. You can ask ChatGPT to act as a famous person and answer your questions in the language you’re learning. In the example below, I asked ChatGPT to act as Meghan Markle and then asked the question “Why did you leave the royal family?” and got a pretty accurate response!

- Grammar and Syntax Corrections:
ChatGPT can be a valuable companion for refining grammar and syntax. By inputting sentences or paragraphs, you can receive instant feedback on their language structure. The model not only identifies errors but also offers suggestions for improvement. This feature aids in developing a strong foundation in grammar, helping learners to construct more accurate and eloquent sentences over time. HOWEVER, (and I felt the need to capitalize this word) if you are a language learner, this tool shouldn’t be used for creating/correcting work that count towards some kind of assessment, in other words, “graded” work. Why is that? Well, if you are asked to write an essay that is going to serve as a tool to assess your use of grammar, vocabulary, cohesive devices, etc and you ask ChatGPT to do your writing task for you, you will, of course, submit an error-free essay, which beats the whole purpose of the assessment as you will lose the opportunity to receive accurate feedback. Remember that feedback is what ultimately helps learners identify the mistakes they’re making in order to improve, no feedback = no learning. So please use this tool wisely, correcting emails you send at work is OK, asking it to do your homework for you is not!
- Vocabulary Expansion:
Language acquisition is heavily dependent on vocabulary. ChatGPT serves as an extensive vocabulary resource, providing definitions, synonyms, and contextual usage for words. As a language learner you can ask the model for explanations of specific terms or inquire about the usage of words in different contexts. This fosters a deeper understanding of vocabulary and encourages the integration of new words into daily conversation. I have the perfect example to illustrate this! I have a student who works in a mine in Kazakhstan and in one of our classes I was explaining the meaning of the word “proficient” and I wanted to provide additional examples that were relevant to his context so I asked ChatGpt to give me examples of sentences where the word proficient was used in a mining context. This is what it came up with! Pretty cool, huh?

- Cultural Insights:
Language learning is not just about mastering words and phrases; it also involves understanding the culture associated with the language. ChatGPT, being trained on a diverse range of texts, can offer insights into cultural aspects related to the language. Learners can ask about customs, traditions, or idioms, gaining a richer understanding of the cultural nuances that shape the language. When we learn a language we don’t only learn the lingüistic aspects of it but also the culture where it’s spoken. I asked ChatGPT about the differences between the US and latin culture and, one more time, the answers didn’t disappoint, although I’d probably have listed “being on time” first on the list!

- Role-Playing Scenarios:
To simulate real-life language scenarios, you can engage in role-playing exercises with ChatGPT in or outside of class. Whether it’s negotiating a business deal, ordering food at a restaurant, or discussing travel plans, the model can provide a dynamic conversational partner. This immersive experience enhances language skills by applying them to practical, everyday situations. In this case, I asked ChatGPT to create a conversation in Spanish using phrases to express regret, say you’re sorry and make promises. Again, it delivered a real-life conversation and included all of the phrases and expressions I requested.

Conclusion:
Incorporating ChatGPT into your language learning journey can revolutionize the way you approach acquiring a new language. Its versatility in providing conversational practice, grammar corrections, vocabulary expansion, cultural insights, and role-playing scenarios offers a holistic and interactive language learning experience.
They say keep your friends close and your enemies closer! I have always battled with the idea of using “too much” technology for language learning purposes, I actually considered AI an enemy and used to believe that it could prevent my students from reaching their goals (cheating on exams crosses my mind all the time!). So as my declared enemy, I decided to keep it closer and started to explore it more and more. Now, after seeing all it can do, I embrace the change and have come to the conclusion that, if used well, technological resources like ChatGPT can actually help my students succeed in their learning journey. How do you feel about ChatGPT?
