Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know About Our Spanish Classes

What makes WeSpeak different from other schools and apps?

Most of our students come to us after trying apps like Duolingo or traditional grammar-heavy classes. Those options are great for learning words, but not for learning how to actually speak.

At WeSpeak Idiomas, our focus is on real conversation from day one. Every class is interactive, engaging, and designed to help you speak naturally and confidently.

Here’s what sets us apart:

  • 🗣 Conversation first: You’ll start speaking Spanish from your first class, no long grammar lectures or endless drills.
  • 👩‍🏫 Certified bilingual teachers: Our teachers are experienced, native-level speakers who guide you with clear explanations and personalized feedback.
  • 💬 Fluency-focused method: We focus on pronunciation, intonation, and listening skills, the key elements to sounding natural and understanding real Spanish.
  • 🌎 Cultural connection: You’ll learn the language and the culture, so you can communicate appropriately and confidently in real-life situations with locals.
  • 💻 Flexible and convenient: Learn from anywhere, on your schedule. Classes are online, affordable, and can be recorded if you ever miss a session.
  • 🤝 Small groups or private lessons: Get real attention and support from a human teacher, not just automated feedback from an app.

At WeSpeak, you’re not just learning Spanish, you’re learning to communicate with real people.

How are our classes conducted?

All of our classes are live on Zoom or in some cases Google Meet and led by qualified teachers who speak both Spanish and English fluently so you’ll always feel supported. Groups meet twice a week.

How do I book my first Spanish class?

For group classes you can book your first trial class on our webpages below, depending on your level.

Spanish for beginners – groups

Spanish for non-beginners – groups

If you prefer 1:1 private classes you can book your first class here.

Do I need to pay any additional costs for materials or registration fees?

Absolutely not, we do not charge any additional fees after you sign up for the course, there are no registration fees, no fees for class materials, no fees for homework, we also don’t charge sales tax. The price you see is the price you pay.

What type of Spanish do you teach?

At WeSpeak we teach standard Latin American Spanish and our teachers all have neutral accents. We have all experienced living in other countries and are well equipped to teach vocabulary used in different countries in Latin America. *We do not teach Spanish from Spain.

Which Spanish course should I sign up for?

If your goal is to become fluent or a confident everyday Spanish speaker, we recommend our Regular Spanish course. This program focuses on real communication, helping you build a solid foundation in speaking, listening, and understanding Spanish step by step. With time and dedication, it will take you all the way to fluency.

If you’re planning to travel and just want to learn the essentials to get around confidently, our Survival Spanish course is perfect for you. You’ll learn the key phrases and expressions you need for day-to-day situations like ordering food, asking for directions, or greeting locals.

What do I need for my online class?

We deliver our classes through Zoom and Google Meet. You only need:

  • a computer, tablet or phone
  • a notebook (digital or physical)
  • an internet connection
Should I take group classes or private 1:1 classes?

Group Classes are a more affordable option and a great way to learn in a fun, social environment. You’ll interact with other students, practice conversation in pairs or small groups, and stay motivated together. Each group session lasts 75 minutes, giving you extra time to practice speaking with peers.

If you prefer a more personalized pace or have an irregular schedule, private classes are ideal. You’ll get one-on-one attention from your teacher, and you can focus on your specific goals. These classes are 50 minutes long, and you have the flexibility to reschedule when needed, perfect for busy or changing schedules.

Why are online classes better than on site classes?

Online classes give you the freedom to learn from anywhere, no traffic, no rushing, and at a lower cost than in-person lessons.

Our live sessions are interactive and personal: you can speak, ask questions, and get instant feedback from your teacher in real time.

And if you ever miss a class, no problem, you can record your session and watch it later, something you can’t do in a traditional classroom.

With WeSpeak, learning Spanish online is flexible, affordable, and designed to fit your life.

How many classes per week do you recommend?

We recommend taking classes twice per week for the best results, but we’re happy to accommodate once-a-week sessions if that fits your schedule better.

Do you teach kids of all ages?

Our classes are designed for kids and teens ages 8+. We tailor the materials to the age of the student to ensure the best learning experience.

I have three children and would like them to have class together, is it possible?

It’s possible as long as they are within the same age range. An 11-year-old and an 18-year-old are at very different stages of development, both cognitively and socially, which makes it challenging for them to be in the same Spanish class. Here’s why:

  1. Learning Pace: An 18-year-old generally has more advanced cognitive skills, allowing them to grasp complex grammar and vocabulary faster than an 11-year-old, who might need more time to understand abstract concepts.
  2. Maturity Levels: Teenagers are more mature in terms of interests, social dynamics, and communication. Topics discussed in class may be more relatable or appropriate for older students, while younger students might feel out of place or uncomfortable.
  3. Teaching Style: Teachers often tailor lessons to the age group. Younger students may benefit from more games and interactive activities, while older students may prefer a more academic approach.

Keeping age-appropriate classes helps create a learning environment where everyone feels comfortable, engaged, and challenged at the right level.

Reason 1 why Duolingo doesn’t work:

In apps like Duolingo, we only learn words or phrases without much context. We may end up with a broad repertoire of phrases or questions that we can’t logically connect in a conversation to communicate in the target language. It’s true that Duolingo offers an extensive vocabulary, however, it prioritizes the learning of lexicon (words) over communicative functions. Communicative functions refer to the use of certain expressions and grammatical forms of a language to appropriately respond to specific situations, such as greeting someone, making a suggestion, asking for directions, offering an apology, giving information, giving a compliment, etc.

Reason 2 why Duolingo doesn’t work:

Another reason why Duolingo doesn’t work is the lack of feedback. A live teacher accompanies you in real-time, and a teacher specialized in second language teaching will create the ideal environment to develop your oral production in class and provide you with immediate feedback. Undoubtedly, technology has advanced a lot, and nowadays we find apps that allow us to record our voice and compare it with the pronunciation of a native speaker. However, even the apps that let you record your voice and compare it with a computer can’t help you correct pronunciation errors or tell you how to position your tongue to produce a certain sound.

Reason 3 why Duolingo doesn’t work:

Duolingo won’t teach you culture, and learning a language goes beyond vocabulary and grammar—it’s about understanding the culture where the language is spoken. Only a human teacher can guide you through the subtleties of human interaction with locals.

Picture this: you’re an American waiter serving a tourist from a country where tipping isn’t common. How would you feel if they tipped you just 7%, or worse, not at all? You’d likely be offended. Now imagine that this tourist learned English but didn’t learn about tipping norms in the U.S., where 15-20% is expected. It could cause awkwardness or even offense.

The same situation applies when learning Spanish. If you focus only on the language and not the culture, you might miss essential social customs. At WeSpeak, our teachers (real humans!) will guide you through traditions, customs, and societal nuances, enhancing your understanding and appreciation of both the language and the people who speak it.
